Anxiety and depression: calming support for mind and body.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to support your nervous system, at our Highgate Hill clinic.

Anxiety and depression are not just in the mind, they show up in the body: tight muscles, disrupted sleep, low energy. We offer calming, evidence-informed support alongside any care you already receive.

How we commonly support

  • Calming an overactive nervous system
  • Improving sleep quality

Acupuncture and the nervous system

Anxiety and low mood aren't only in your head, they live in your body too. A racing heart, a tight chest, shoulders up around your ears, none of these are "just anxiety", they're your nervous system stuck switched on. Acupuncture has been shown to help shift the body out of that switched-on, fight-or-flight state and into a calmer, rest-and-digest state, supporting the release of the body's own natural calming chemicals.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is often described as Liver Qi Stagnation with Heart-Spirit disturbance, a way of naming stuck, unresolved tension that unsettles both mood and sleep. It's not a diagnosis to replace what your doctor or therapist gives you, it's a different lens on the same picture. Acupuncture is not a replacement for mental health care. It's a calming, complementary support you can bring alongside the care you already receive.

Patient story

A young patient came in with severe anxiety that was affecting daily life. Acupuncture settled their nervous system noticeably from the very first session, giving the family a starting point they hadn't found elsewhere. Ongoing sessions since have continued to support a calmer baseline.

Our belief

You play a vital role in your own healthcare. The earlier you seek support, the quicker you feel more like yourself.

Good questions

Reaching out for support takes courage. Here's what tends to ease first-visit nerves.

Is this a replacement for my therapist or psychiatrist?

No, this is complementary support alongside your existing mental health care, not a replacement for it.

Is it normal to feel nervous about the first appointment?

Very normal. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to, and sessions are calm and unhurried.

Will acupuncture help if I'm on medication?

It can be used safely alongside most medications. We take a full history and can liaise with your GP if helpful.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No, you can book directly. A referral is only required for WorkCover, Veterans' Affairs, CTP or a Medicare chronic condition management plan.

Can I claim on my private health fund?

In most cases, yes. The clinic is registered with all major health funds for physiotherapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, so most policies allow you to claim on the spot through HICAPS and just pay the gap. Check with your fund to confirm your level of cover.

What if I'm in crisis right now?

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 000. For urgent support any time, Lifeline is available on 13 11 14. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are complementary support for ongoing anxiety and low mood, not a substitute for crisis care.
