Stress: bringing body and mind back into balance.
A whole-body approach to stress at our Highgate Hill clinic in Brisbane.
A little stress can keep you motivated, but ongoing stress drains your energy, affects your mood and leads to long-term health issues. With the right care, your body and mind can be brought back into balance.
How stress shows up in the body
- Tight shoulders, jaw clenching and back pain
- Poor sleep and racing thoughts at night
- Fatigue and low energy through the day
- Digestive upset and low immunity
The stress response
When your brain senses a threat, it flips a switch, called fight-or-flight. Your heart beats faster, your muscles tighten, your breathing gets shorter and your digestion slows down. This is a great system for a genuine emergency, but modern stress like work deadlines or money worries doesn't switch off quickly, so that alarm system can stay stuck in the "on" position for weeks or months at a time.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is often called Liver Qi Stagnation, a way of describing built-up tension that hasn't had a chance to move through and release. It's why stress so often lands in the same spots: tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a knotted lower back. Acupuncture helps switch the body from fight-or-flight into what's sometimes called rest-and-digest, the calmer state where healing, digestion and sleep actually happen.

Patient story
A patient dealing with joint pain from a viral illness was also under significant stress, and the two were feeding into each other. Acupuncture helped regulate both the physical inflammation and the stress response, and the patient found their overall resilience to getting sick improved over the following months.

Good questions
Talking about stress isn't always easy. Here's what most people want to know first.
Is it normal to feel nervous about discussing stress?
Very. This is a private, judgment-free space, and you only need to share what feels comfortable.
Will treatment interact with my anxiety medication?
We take a full history including any medications, and treatment is designed to work safely alongside your existing care.
How quickly can I expect to feel calmer?
Many people feel noticeably calmer after their first session, with more lasting change building over a few weeks of treatment.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, you can book directly. A referral is only required for WorkCover, Veterans' Affairs, CTP or a Medicare chronic condition management plan.
Can I claim on my private health fund?
In most cases, yes. The clinic is registered with all major health funds for physiotherapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, so most policies allow you to claim on the spot through HICAPS and just pay the gap. Check with your fund to confirm your level of cover.
What if stress is affecting my chest or breathing?
Chest pain, tightness or trouble breathing should always be checked by a doctor first, since these can have several causes and some need urgent care. Once anything serious has been ruled out, acupuncture and physiotherapy can be a genuinely helpful part of managing ongoing stress symptoms.
